Marble Paint!

Pinterest to me is like an encyclopedia of great ideas! This is one of the cool things i picked up from Pinterest.

Place a piece of paper in a tray. You'll need some paints and marbles for this art.

Drop a few paints of varying colors randomly on the paper.

Put the marbles in.

Let the kiddo twirl the tray away!

It was waaaaaay too fun. Even i had a ball! :P

We drew!

We followed a step by step application on the ipad. It was very easy!

Sonshine's cat (after adding some color; i helped him use a marker to outline his drawing too).

Maybe i am bias, but i much prefer his coloring than mine. I realised i was limited by my knowledge (i.e there's no such thing as a blue cat much less a blue headed cat with red body and yellow legs!) that i chose one color for my cat. Sonshine on the other hand, unlimited in his creativity, chose to use blue, red and yellow for his cat. Looks much more vibrant and attractive than my boring color! You want creativity? Look at your chidren's choice of colors!

He also learnt to draw a train. Again, i just love his choice of color combination!

There was once a time when sonshine was so averse to holding a pencil, let alone draw. But today, he does not hesistate to pick a pencil and even enjoyed our drawing sessions. So awesome! No one can be more pleased than me! I love to draw and an art teacher once said i was quite a cartoonist. Hope the son will pick up the love of drawing like i did. :)

l'l sister cannot resist joining in the fun! Or rather she was too jealous to let me have some alone time with big brother at the table!

Chinese New Year- Sand Art

I don't know about you, but i had an exhuasting but fulfilling Chinese new year! I feel very blessed just by being with my family & friends.

We didn't do much Chinese new year activities but just this:

Chinese New year sandart. We have never done this, this is our first! Since they had Chinese New year themes, i decided to get some to do at home.

Peel off the stickers and sprinkle the colored sand!

This is done by the boy- choice of color fully controlled by the mother.

This is what happens when you let the boy choose his own colors! Purple face, purple eyes... i had to bite my lip and just encouraged him to choose any colors he wanted.

What do we do with the leftover sand? Finger Play!

A very mosaic Xmas

We made Christmas Star mosaic ornaments!

Home made xmas tree ornaments

Materials used:

1) Cut out tree shape- i made my own using carton boxes & painted over it and cut out a xmas tree

2) glue

3) small cut out shapes

4) gold dust

We smeared glue on the trees, N decorated it with the small cut out shapes & sprinkled gold dust

When dry, i punched a hole on each tree, string them & hung them on our tree- together with the snowman craft he made in school.

Its placed at a rather obscure spot on the tree...'cause it ain't match my tree decor- as you can see! =P (POST NOTE: just in case you think we are hurting his pride by hiding his crafts, his ornaments are at the side of the tree-placed at his eye level, facing our main door. Which means each time we come home, the first things we see on the tree are his xmas ornaments. This picture was taken from our living area view :))

Mixing Colors

We've been reading a Malay book on colors and sonshine learnt about colors mixing.

I didn't want him to just memorize the fact but to see for himself. Hence we did some color mixing today!

I showed N what are the primary colors. I wrote the words 'blue, red yellow' on the paper and N painted the respective colors over them.

Then we started mixing! Although he knew what to expect, he was still intrigued to witness the colors magically change into its secondary colors.

You can also play color mixing using playdough. It's a bit tricky though, you need to mix an equal amount of dough otherwise, the color wouldn't be obvious.

We play paint!

Today being our non-school day, i decided to take out our paint. Previously, sonshine boy was never interested in this art play but surprisingly he had loads of fun today & kept asking for more. YAY!

This turned out so well that i am going to use it for our bible study activity!

The boy is a late bloomer. He recently is into pretend & imaginary play even with paint! I painted a tree, cars, traffic lights and he was happy pretending the cars were moving this way and that. He made me paint his grands' house (the odd looking thing on the bottom left) and pretended that blob (right side of the picture) was a tunnel. We had fun! :)

Make Van Gogh's Bed

I first saw painting activities over at Adventures of Bear but never thought of actually doing it with the boy...until i stumbled upon this book at the library.

It's really a cool book. The illustrations are all famous paintings but the author manage to piece them up and make a story- even with rhyming words which made it enjoyable to read! Best of all, there are flaps, ribbons etc for the child to touch, hence the book is called 'Touch the Art'.

It also tells the reader what is the painting called and who the artist is. Sonshine boy was surprisingly, very interested in this book.

Not wanting to slip this chance by, i created an activity relating to the book we read. I printed some of the paintings we saw on the book.

The kiddo matches the painting to its name and artist. It was interesting to note that he was able to recall the names of each painting; i didn't have to guide him.

I love this book! What an easy way to expose the child to art paintings!

Chinese New Year craft

Here's a Chinese New Year (CNY) craft we did!



First, i pasted doubled sided tape on a red paper to make the word, which means 'fortune' in English. At the same time, i taught N how to read it.

To avoid mess, i place the paper in a tray.

Remove the white tape and let your child sprinkle some gold glitter!

The result! Ready to be hanged at our door!

Friday Art

It's Friday! We did some painting!

I bought a set of paint brush (or rollers? what are they called?).  N happily painting away.

I used an old fork and made some patterns!

Paint paint paint!

Yes, it's art week. Well sort of. Its more to replace my lack of inspiration and to get the boy's arty mojo going.

N doesn't have a keen interest in art. But im still grateful that he had at least sat down and filled the paper with paint!

The Masterpiece! It may look like rubbish to some but to me its one of the most beautiful piece of work i've ever seen! Rightfully so! Because its done by my son!

But N is still not into this art thing. The minute the paper is filled, he stood up and walked away. :(

Teddy bear stars

We did some art and craft today!

Some prepartory work before N did his actual craft. First, i traced some star shapes on a paper.

I punched out some teddy bear shapes using my arty hole puncher.

Now it's N's turn! He's smacking some glue on the stars
